Moral Compass
The Catholic bishop of Rottenburg-Stuttgart, Gebhard Fürst, calls for a "moral compass" for the economy. In his opinion, the recent scandals have contributed to a loss of confidence in the social order. Such a moral compass should not only include materialistic values. On the contrary, he stressed the central importance of values which directly affect human behaviour such as honesty, reliability and fair play. Furthermore, Fürst points out that companies whose managers are guided by ethical principles, are economically more successful in the long-term and show a better sustainable development than those that focus only on short-term success and mainly define added value as an increase in profits.
