From 1 – 4 September 2008, the ninth the federal football championships for people working in workshops for adapted work will take place in Duisburg. New is the official title: "German Football Championships of Workshops for Adapted Work".
The event is unique, not only in Germany. The championships are jointly organised by four associations. In addition to the Sepp Herberger Foundation of the German Football Federation (DFB), Special Olympics Germany, the German Sports Federation of Persons with Disabilities (DBS) as well as BAG: WfbM are involved in the organisation.
During the past years, a lot has happened. In football as well as in workshops. Almost every German workshop now has a football team. There is almost a league mode in operation. The best teams are invited to Duisburg.
Football is played in many of the over 700 workshops at 2,300 locations. Football is also part of the accompanying educational measures. Team spirit, fairness and conflict management abilities are trained in a playful way. Football is much more than just fun.
In a first stage, a “state champion” is determined in every federal state. Each state federation of workshops for adapted work (LAG WfbM) is responsible for carrying out the competitions at the state level. The competition mode differs from state to state. In any case, the state champion were determined until early August. The state champions qualified for the final tournament in Duisburg.
Each teams sends twelve players and two coaches to Duisburg. The players have to be workshop employees. There is no other constriction for participation. The teams or rather the workshops only have to pay for the journey to the completion ground. All other expenses for accommodation, meals and events are covered by the organisers!
At the competition ground in Duisburg, the winner is determined through a preliminary round, intermediate rounds and eventually through the final round of the competition. The winner receives the coveted trophy that is not a challenge cup, but stays with the team.
