UN-Convention has Come into Force
Since 26 March 2009, the UN-Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is binding under international law in Germany. The first human rights convention of the new millennium does not claim any special rights for persons with disabilities, but aims to guarantee equal rights for everybody. For that special group of persons whose human rights have hardly been in the public eye, there still remains a lot to do.

What is now going to happen in Germany? To begin with, there will be changes in the field of education. Those changes have long since been demanded.

In order to be successful, politicians must be committed to the implementation process of the convention. This agreement strives to effectively improve participation in everyday life and self-determination of persons with disabilities. There is still a lot to do, starting with cultural and educational policy as well as social affairs, transport and health policy. The scope of measures includes kindergarten school, vocational training, working life and life in the old age. Effective participation has not yet been reached in many areas.
