Inclusion International is a global federation of family-based organizations that promotes the human rights of people with intellectual disabilities all over the world. It represents more than 200 member federations in 115 countries that are located across five different regions: the Middle East and North Africa, Europe, Africa and the Indian Ocean as well as the Americas and Asia Pacific. For 50 years, Inclusion International has made sure the voices of people with disabilities and their families are heard. The inclusion of people with disabilities into their communities as valued neighbours and citi-zens is a priority for Inclusion International externer Link.

Every four years, Inclusion International organizes a World Congress that focusses on a relevant theme for persons with intellectual disabilities. In 2006, 1,400 people from more than 57 countries attended the conference in Acapulco. The motto at that time was “Building an inclusive future – towards a global agenda for action”.

The programme of 2010’s World Congress reflects the issues that affect the lives of people with intellectual disabilities: School and education, living and working, young and old, healthy and ill – all these aspects form an integral part. More than 150 speakers in around 60 events will be offering guidance, basis for discussion and stimulus in shaping opinion.

Among the attendees are Ursula von der Leyen, the German Minister for Social Affairs, Jan Jarab, Regional Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Yannis Vardakastanis, President of the European Disability Forum, Franz Wolfmayr, President of the European Association of Service Providers for Persons with Disabilities and Johan ten Geuzendam, Head of Unit for the integration of people with disabilities at the European Commission.
